on the Passing of
Dr. Frances A. Karnes
The Mississippi Association for Gifted Children mourns the loss of Dr. Frances A. Karnes, a visionary educator, tireless advocate, and beloved founder of our organization. Her passing on August 22, 2025, marks the end of an era, but her legacy continues to shine brightly in the lives of gifted children, families, and educators across Mississippi and the nation. Dr. Karnes was instrumental in shaping gifted education in our state—her unwavering commitment, pioneering spirit, and powerful voice brought meaningful change to legislation, schools, and communities.
As the founder of both our association and the Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Karnes transformed dreams into institutions that have empowered generations of learners. Her passion was contagious, her leadership unparalleled, and her impact immeasurable. We are forever grateful for her vision and dedication, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to work alongside her. Dr. Karnes’s legacy lives on in every gifted child who is seen, supported, and celebrated because of her life's work.
